Year end 2025

Once a year MaryAnn lets me have some interaction with our friends and clients. I am told that I am not  politically correct.  So I will pen a few words in the grey area, here goes.

First off, I thank all of you for your continued support, both on the business level and the personal level. Many of you know that my mother passed away in August, I heard many stories and had good conversations about your dysfunctional families. I wrote in a previous newsletter about the church, really cult, that my mother and other family members were and are involved in. I’ll spare you the proper adjectives to describe this organization, if you are interested in knowing more about it just google 2×2 church abuse scandal. The leading investigative organization in the United States has members involved in this cult so it’s little wonder nothing gets done. I will tell you this, it’s really, really important to stand against this type of evil. I don’t mind confrontation so it comes easier to me but the question does cross your mind, why can’t people behave?

The landscape industry is changing rapidly, the big, wonderful landscape jobs are going away. No wonder, people don’t have the disposable income that they once did and the money is allocated to different areas now. In the eighties when I got going folks wanted magazine type landscapes, showy, better than the neighbor kind of places. We built complete gardens, we removed the trees, did the grading, built the structures, replanted the trees, irrigation, electrical work, concrete and paver work, everything. It was really fun. Today, some of the landscape companies are just extensions of the general public’s stupidity. The people stand there with their phone comparing prices about things they have no understanding of. Everything has a chemical solution, kill the mosquitoes, the flies, every bug, the snakes, the weeds. In other words sterilize everything. Don’t humans understand that the same chemical killing the bug or weed is killing them? I do, If I do everyone else should, I didn’t go to college and I went to work instead of the last year of high school, this stuff is just common sense. Don’t misunderstand me we still work some wonderful jobs, but I’ll tell you this, MaryAnn walks away from more that she designs and quotes. Most of our work in 2025 was maintenance and repair work. I really enjoy repair work and the maintenance work allows the repair work to be caught early, before it becomes a repair.

I tend to think the political situation is part of the problem, people are really tired of the whipsaw action of the government. I don’t need to tell you but as we are all aware, the government is run by genuine geniuses. These fellows think the government employees are just sitting at their desks doing nothing. I got it, we do have some people that glide along but every company of any size has this. The truth is we have much to learn from these gliders, many of these people have really good ideas. Our  country does not function without government employees and it does not function well with a super efficient operation. Some overlap and slop slows down snap decisions. The nazis were a well oiled machine, and yes that type of government can exist today if we the people allow it. You see, we live in a democratic republic, people forget this. Today people want a king, no responsibility, no applied efforts, nothing on their part. The country we live in today was built on struggles, battles and challenges. Our constitution is not to be trampled, the rights of citizens, not civilians by the way, are to be respected, demand that type behavior from those that  WE send to Washington. The politicians forget that if they were elected by say 53 percent of the voters, I’m just pulling a close number to make a point, that there are 47 percent of eligible voters  that aren’t digging them. So it seems like these elected officials need to be talking to the 47 percent. In school 53 percent is a loser.

The tariffs worked out really well, we kicked our trading partners and made things more expensive. The first commandment in how to get along in a world economy, the second is to bully small nations but let’s go back to the first, here’s an example. Today a Bobcat MT100 skid loader costs about 38,000 dollars, great machine. Today the comparable Chinese made skid loader can be had for 13,000 dollars. Not the same machine quality wise? I was surprised too, a Kubota diesel engine, name brand hydraulics, quality tracks, grease fittings at pivot points, LCD dash screen, bolt on cutting edge, powdered  coat paint, quality wiring harness, and so on. How can this be? “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”, turns out the Chinese can play the tariffs game a little better than we can. I emailed the one company around six in the morning, by noon the same day I had a response, this included pricing, model information and an explanation on how they get around the tariffs and by the way, they had some state side they could land at my door in two weeks. We are in a trade war we cannot win. The used machinery market is down, why buy a used machine when you can buy an import for less?  One more example, a Typhon 1 ton wheel loader made in China, under 17,000 dollars, telescopic boom, Kubota engine, nice machine. The industry standard is the Avant, an Avant in the same operating range is north of 50,000 dollars. I’ve reduced our machine inventory but I have not bought anything. I’m partial to the Bobcat brand because of Metro Bobcat, the dealer in this area. You don’t buy a Bobcat because of the machine as much as you buy one because of Metro, good guys. JCB, Case, Caterpillar, John Deere are all good companies but how can they and their dealers compete with China?  The answer is two fold, have the Chinese make the machines for them, which some companies do now and second bring manufacturing back to America. President Trump is trying to do that with the tariffs. The trouble I see is do Americans want to work in these jobs? We live in a society where people can’t put their phones down long enough to have a conversation let alone assemble a machine. If you want to slowdown progress in any decision just text the other party back and forth for half of a day instead of calling them and solving the problem in 3 minutes.

Now let’s tackle healthcare, I had an ongoing discussion with Carefirst, they won’t cover the Lyme disease and STARI disease infections I had. I’m not picking on or singling out Carefirst, they must abide by government regulations, blah blah blah. According to researchers with an electron microscope, the Lyme spirochetes are different than the standard periodontal gum disease spirochetes. Carefirst bases their information off of AI, AI isn’t smart enough to discern the difference in spirochetes. The bottom line is they don’t cover anything that they don’t understand. That’s fine, very, very few doctors understand Lyme and even less understand STARI disease infections. I was able to deal with the STARI with the use of ozone and Japanese knotweed. The medical profession says knotweed doesn’t work for STARI. Turns out Japanese knotweed grows where Lyme and STARI are prevalent. Nature does provide. STARI is carried in the Lonestar tick. If you have these tick problems do not use this stuff without a doctor helping you or someone trained in these diseases. Some of the northern states have better healthcare for this. Speaking of good doctors, Integrative Denistry in Pikesville is where I’ve gotten a lot of help with my teeth and overall wellbeing. Dr Micheal Baylin is one of a kind, he has much education in the human health department, not just teeth. The thing that stands out about Dr Baylin is he gets energy movement throughout the body. Dr Baylin’s daughter is a dentist there also, a very good one with great communication skills, The staff is great also. One of those places that is irreplaceable. Much of the sickness today comes from synthetic fragrances, synthetic clothing and electrical frequencies that disrupt how our natural energy flows though and around our bodies. Food grown with synthetic fertilizer and pesticides has less energy that food grown with microbes. America today is awash with low quality food and people are always hungry. The synthetic system upsets nature’s  balance, nature does know what it’s doing. The same goes for lawns and landscapes, the grass is green but has no ability to survive without the chemical. The way we do it in our company relies on nature and is not time sensitive because the microbes work when the moisture and temperature are correct for them.

I should take this space and tell you of all the services we offer but I won’t. These companies provide the same services and products as we do for the most part but it’s the owners and employees that I want to highlight. Randy at Arbormasters  Tree Service.  Randy puts his own time and money into trying to reduce  the trash problem in Liberty watershed. Randy designed and had signs printed up in English and Spanish. These signs were respectful and reminded folks of the benefits of using the watershed. Turns out civility works well, I’ve noticed less trash on the shores. Baltimore City would do well to learn from Randy on how to handle this issue. Randy’s brother Rick, along with his wife Carol run First Fruits Farm in Freeland, this farm donates all their produce to the hungry. I’m talking millions of pounds over the years. Randy and Rick put a lot of effort into making Maryland a better place. Dale Tober who many of you have seen working with us, spends a morning a week helping prison inmates read the Bible and get a handle on changing their path into something positive, hats off to Dale. Greg of Provision crane service, also you’ve seen him on our jobs, spends time working with the homeless by introducing the Gospel to them. These fellows are part of a group of people I’ve run across that spend their own money and time to better society. Dicks landscaping has a garden center and landscape company just up the road from us, it’s a multiple generation business. Tony’s father got it going and his son Anthony is now involved. Instead of going to a big box store, stop by Dick’s on Liberty road and check out their flowers, shrubs and Christmas trees. Rental Solutions is right across from Dick’s and has a good selection of things to rent, check them out when you need a tool or something you can’t justify buying. Dick’s and Rental Solutions provide jobs and services to our area. I mention these businesses and should note like many businesses we have in our community, these places need customers since these businesses help make the community. Speaking of community, anyone who owns property in Eldersburg is aware of the high real estate values, I’ve got news for you, these prices don’t stay elevated without police intervention. The various agencies put a lot of effort into rounding up the swill. Hats off to them and thank them when you see them.

Finally, in 2026 hopefully we can work on solutions instead of arguing the Democrat/Republican thing. You’re a liberal, you’re a conservative……who cares. Let’s fix problems, one of the best diagnostic tools I use for fixing problems is to take the money out of the equation. Money distorts the outcome, changes decisions. Simple solutions are the distillation of big ideas. Most of the readers of this letter get it. The doers in society don’t ask for a thank you or even recognition, when you run across one in your travels this year thank them.  Remember our Creator.

Take care,

Eric

Spring wonders

It’s the end of May 2025, you could change the date forward or backward by a few years and the results are the same. The stupidity of the American homeowner, let me explain. For some reason a dandelion or clover is offensive to many homeowner so they pour on the 2,4 d and other broadleaf chemicals thinking they are eliminating these offensive plants. The truth of what happens next is totally out of grasp to these folks. Let’s go over a few things that happen when people control weeds. First, the weed appears to die or be knocked back, second the soil is compromised, third, the chemical starts to break down, this disintegration doesn’t mean that the chemical is now inert. These lawn chemicals are compounds, this means its multiple ingredients combined. Some of these ingredients stabilize the volatile chemicals that actually kill the plant material. When these chemicals become unstable they become more dangerous to animals and people. So let’s stop for a minute and think about the increase in heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s and obesity, are we seeing less cases or more? The answer is more, it’s designed that way. The 2,4 d and other lawn products are designed to kill. DDT contains 2,4d, DDT was used in Vietnam to defoliate and kill crops. Let me ask you this, when you treat your lawn and lose trees that have been alive a hundred plus years, do you think they died by chance? We live in a world where very few people have any ability to think critically.
Let’s go on now, the tree is now dead, it needs to be removed. The same homeowner that killed it with their genius management techniques now decides that first thing in the spring it has to come down. The tree has been standing dead for a year or two and we just came through a winter where the ground froze tight. Don’t you think a cold February day would have been much better to get a crane in there and remove 25 tons of tree? Less turf damage, easier cleanup, stump ground and ready for spring. That’s not how most of these stupid property managers think, first thing in spring they have to have the tree removed. There is no care for bird and squirrels nesting, no care for the lawn getting rutted, no idea that the removal is generally cheaper in the winter. The very lawn they they are trying make perfect they are asking a tree crew to scuff up. Lawn damage comes with large removals, it’s not a problem with the tree crew, a good company puts it back together. Now the tree is gone, the lawn is topsoiled and over seeded in the damaged area, guess what happens next? The homeowner or the lawn chemical company applies a pre emergent herbicide. The new grass seed doesn’t do well with pre emergent so the home owner complains to the tree company because their seed was no good. This true scenario can continue and does year in and year out, why is this? Marketing, plain stupidity, low IQ, self centered and lack of any idea how nature works.
I write this because it’s simply amazing to me the disconnect that people have, it’s no wonder that America is on a downward spiral. The general population is clueless. The very “weeds” these people despise, dandelion, nettles, chickweed and so on are healers. God provides medicine in nature and most people have no idea.

Year end 2024

We’re at the Yin time of year, the energy is low, the days are short, nature is quiet on the surface. The time of year when we look backward and forward.

Our business this past season has consisted of a lot of repair work, very little new construction and a fair amount of tree removals, some maintenance thrown in also. MaryAnn is a design/build person, she loves the hectic scheduling of suppliers, weather issues and people. The past year wasn’t a favorite of hers. I, on the other hand like problems, don’t get me wrong a day of smooth sailing is wonderful but figuring out why something won’t start or why a sinkhole appeared, is to me, enjoyable.

Our client base has changed over the years, the big build jobs have gone away, the big estate stuff is shrinking and the clients disposable income is significantly less.  When I started 38 years ago in the gardening industry, maybe ten percent of my client base was government employees or contractors, this doesn’t include police, firefighter, municipal type of folks which make the municipality run smoothly. Today, 60-70 percent of our client base are government employees, this makes sense, Maryland is located just north of DC. Roughly 65 percent of our clients are center to left in their political views. When I started the diehard democrat would have been considered a republican today. The biggest change in that time frame I’ve seen, and I’m talking politically, is how people have become intolerant of the other side, they hate each other. I don’t understand the benefits of having a country run by only people you agree with, the other guy never has any good ideas? I want to hear all the ideas, all the solutions, I want to talk to people who have been there and seen it. In school I learned America was a melting pot of all peoples and that made us strong, I still believe that but we’ve allowed ourselves to be weakened by foolish bickering.

The marketing in this country has become so good that people take it as the Gospel truth. Your lawn has weeds, you’ll be less than your neighbor unless you have a mono crop of fescue, nature abhors a mono crop . Whole body deodorant that lasts for 72 hours, whatever happened to bathing? Take this medicine for a good nights rest, come work with us for a day, you’ll sleep well without medicine. We’ve lost touch with reality. This past election was a great example of marketing, the ol’boy was everywhere at once, he sewed up the religious right vote and moved on to the Hispanic vote, after that he went after the Amish. He did something that previous candidates couldn’t do, he got the Amish involved. Successful selling is creating a crisis and then providing a solution, the solution always caterers to the seller. Capitalism run amok.

A great number of our clients are dealing with cancer as I write this, it’s disappointing. I’ve said and written about it many times, limit your chemical exposure. Lawn chemicals, pesticides of all sorts, no you don’t need to treat your landscapes for ants, they’re part of nature’s mechanism, they’ll be there long after you’re gone. Spiders and other insects the same thing, put them outside and figure out why they are in your house, they have to be eating something. Mice are the same way, they show up when food is available. Clean up the kitchen and don’t leave crumbs around. When you treat the property for “pests” you are not understanding that these chemicals will kill you, and don’t tell me they only use a small amount, poor argument. There are remedies for problem insects and or rodents, e-mail MaryAnn, she has some good solutions. Treatment to prevent “pest” problems buys you a bed for treatment in the hospital, some of these chemicals hang around your house and property for 400 days. Golf courses are another cancer problem as are farm fields and conventional farmed food. It goes back to marketing, people buy anything that is marketed to them, good or bad. The same company that made chemicals for use in the holocaust make a popular weed killer today, their products weren’t needed back then and aren’t needed today. It goes back to successful salesmanship, create a crisis, provide a solution. It’s up to you as the consumer to educate yourself. We are so concerned about education we send our kids to the best daycares that provide early education but aren’t concerned that these same daycares treat the ground the children play on, wake up folks. A popular phrase I hear a lot is “ the government wouldn’t let it on the market if it was bad”, let me explain it like this. The circuses have a clown shortage, all the applicants went into politics. The genetic issue is about 15 percent according to what oncologists have told me, I don’t know how accurate this is, but the info comes from a good source. It’s interesting to note that many of these chemicals affect the DNA by turning genetic switches on or off. The question is how do you reverse this? No one knows, not even the chemical manufacturer. Parkinson’s, diabetes, and gut issues among other health problems also go back to chemical exposure. I carry a tremendous amount of of knowledge about this subject because I was born with out a complete enzyme package in my liver, the above mentioned chemicals along with synthetic fragrances and a few other items cause me to have seizures or go into anaphylaxes shock. I know more about this stuff than most doctors, pay attention. With insurance companies running the health care system, we are in trouble.

A few words on landscape products and practices, first, don’t set your yard waste out for the trash man. Compost it, look up hugelkultur, a German derived way of composting that handles all yard waste, the Koreans practice a similar method. Second, colored mulch from big box stores, this stuff is less than garbage. It robs the nutrients from the soil and stunts plant growth. If you are going to use colored mulch, which I don’t recommend, buy it from Frey agriculture, these guys make it properly. Third cut your lawn at 4 inches, I know, I know I sound like a broken record but higher cutting thickens the grass and helps shade the soil, it all about good horticulture practices, good horticulture practices save money and promote better health to the gardener. Fourth, don’t expect your lawn crew to know these things, most do not, educate yourself and then educate them. Everything has been learned about gardening and agriculture for us to harvest a crop, most of it has been forgotten, go back and read Steiner, Charles Walters, William Albrecht, the old timers. Pay attention to Joe Salatan, John Kempf,  Acres magazine, these guys are the here and now on gardening and agriculture. Good horticulture practices are becoming rare.

It’s been rumored that a well known gun company is making a new gun, it’s called the “Congressman”, it doesn’t work and you can’t fire it. Going forward in 2025 wouldn’t it be nice if the government served us? Not the other way around. Instead of raising taxes, let’s not spend as much. Let’s make John’s Hopkins hospital accessible to everyone, matter in fact let’s clean up the debris that’s carjacking folks and robbing them and all the other quality of life crimes that affect Baltimore. It’s not that hard, it’s called keeping politics out of the police department, it’s called education of the student, Baltimore is the perfect example of why more government does not work. We have a whole bunch of kids in Baltimore that would be good mechanics, landscapers, urban farmers, plumbers, etc. if the city government stopped worrying about color, gender, wokeness and other unprofitable ideas. A rising tide lifts all boats, stop trying to drain the harbor. People are people.

I’d like to thank everyone that is in the community, our clients, our suppliers, the police and fire folks, the businesses that sell things and provide services. The people that do things behind the scenes that make a difference. These folks, and there are many, do things and take care of issues that improve the community, these folks dig into their wallets and spend their time, almost no one notices them. America doesn’t need to be made great, it is great because of these people.

Finally I’d like to mention one of these people from the above mentioned paragraph. Worthy Washington, Worthy is retiring from the Sheriff’s department in Carroll County after many years of service. A true public servant that benefited everyone in the community with his work. Hopefully his lovely wife Ella has a list of things for him to do to keep him out of trouble. Many thanks, Worthy.

Have a great, safe holiday season and a happy 2025.

Spring troubles 2020

Everybody has their opinion on this Chinese virus known as Covid 19, yup, I’ll bet you find that term offensive and that’s okay. The Chinese and other developed nations including the US have a love affair with chemicals in agriculture. These chemicals have been documented to affect the immune system in animals and humans. These viruses love folks with weakened immune systems, oh but I live healthy you say, yeah right, compared to what, the average American? These people party to beat hell, sit in front of a screen day and half the night and drive to their mailbox, and that’s healthy? The liquor stores have been doing a brisk business but the flower shop isn’t allowed to open, think about it, does that make sense? The virus spreads with close contact, so keep your distance, don’t shut down the economy, make some adjustments to how businesses work and keep on making money. You see it’s all about control, you have politicians who know  how to fleece a business but not run one, trying to make business decisions. The general public needs me and my brilliant ideas they say, it’s a justification for their socialist ideas, talk to the Cubans about socialism.
Back to the chemical situation, we are going through spring, the neighborhoods smell like lawn chemicals and the people are home in their houses breathing this stuff. The general population has no clue about how these lawn chemicals affect their health, you see, the advertising says the stuff is safe.  Here’s a tip, always read the material data safety sheet and the label, if you don’t understand it find someone who does. The genius on the lawn care truck, don’t believe a word he says, read the label and safety sheet.

These face masks made from whatever is lying around the house? That’s an activity that the politicians and medical people thought up to give the general population something to do, let me feel useful because all I’m doing is sitting around watching the news and it’s making me anxious they say. We keep hearing that the experts are basing everything on science, making a mask out of a t-shirt or old dress to prevent the spread of a virus is good science? People bullshit themselves. A virus is smaller than bacteria, matter of fact viruses are used to fight bacterial infections, the virus attaches to the bacteria similar in the way a parasitic wasp attacks a tomato horn worm. So think about it, what is the mask really doing? That’s good science?
Finally, who’s paying for all these handouts? People have died fighting to preserve this country and its constitution. Here’s an idea, let’s follow the constitution and what the founding fathers thought about tyrannical government. The problem is it takes personal responsibility and hard work, two things that many folks today find distasteful.

Spring time

Here in the Mid Atlantic area we’ve had a mild winter, the middle of February has felt more like the middle of March. People look forward to spring with all the flowers and trees blooming, green grass and warm weather. I should say most people do, some folks have trouble with pollen so early summer is more their time. I find it ironic that nature, being perfect, needs so much input from people. Take for example crab grass control, every year these geniuses apply this chemical to their lawn. I wonder if it works so well why it’s needed this year, think about it. Crab grass is a high protein grass that is nature’s way of covering the soil to prevent erosion, it also comes on at the time the animals need more protein in their diet, think young deer and cattle. Why is it in your lawn? Real simple, cutting the grass too low, cut at four inches, second, not enough calcium in the soil, and third, drought conditions, it’s actually preserving the soil.  Then of course we have clover and dandelions, two beneficials to the soil, clover fixes nitrogen and dandelions provide relief from compaction. Dandelions also provide pollen for the early pollinators. We’ll see this season these idiots try to kill every bug around their yard, grubs, flies and wasps, along the way they’ll kill a lot more and not even know it. These extra killings will include their pets and their kids and sometimes themselves, don’t think so? Read the label of what you are using or having applied to your living area, you do the research, you understand the chemicals, you take responsibility for what you use. The people in this country rely on the marketing machine to solve all their problems, why, they’re too lazy to educate themselves, sure they have all this formal education but they can’t tell you how things work, no common sense. A trip to the local garden center will provide you with enough chemicals to answer all your made up problems, of course, the idiot working there is the expert and the consumer has too much money so he buys stuff that’s not needed. The idiot at the garden center can’t help you with diabetes or dementia or genetic problems your kid has, he can’t help you with cancer or heart problems, actually he can’t even help you understand the benefits  of a grub or a fly or a wasp.

So this year instead of being an idiot, try learning the benefits of all the stuff you’ve been unsuccessful in killing in the years past.
